We had a blast in Lafayette and New Iberia this weekend! The boys
competed in the World Gumbo Cookoff in New Iberia so the girls got
together with the kids in Lafayette before heading to New Iberia. We
ate at Chic-fil-a, which was a total madhouse! There were so many
people in the double drive through lines that the line extended down
the street. We ate inside so the kids could go play on the playground.
When it was time to leave, Jane wouldn't come down so I had to go up
into the "space ship" and get her out.
We had ice cream on the way to the pumpkin patch, which was very
impressive: face painting, jump castles, concessions, hay rides,
balloons, mazes, petting zoo and pumpkins galore! Jane spent most of
her time either at the petting zoo (she couldn't get enough of the
white goat) or the jump castle.

Some kids took naps on the 20 minute drive to New Iberia, but Jane and Elle had a great time in the back seat chatting. The boys had already sold out of all their "fried chicken cracklin" when we arrived. On Saturday you can sell whatever you want and the gumbo competition is on Sunday. The bell rings at 5:30 a.m. and the burners and generators start up. By 6:30 all generators have be off and gumbo must be turned in to judge at 11. They had to prepare 15 gallons of gumbo. They chose to make a duck, chicken and andouille sausage gumbo. It was delicious, but it did not make the cut this year. Granted, this was their first year to compete and there are over 80 teams! I guess we will be eating a lot of gumbo this year in preparation for next year!
